Our church wants to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey. This will be a work that takes weeks, months, and possibly years. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) and the North Texas Annual Conference have asked churches like ours to help in three ways:

GIVE

UMCOR has people on the ground working directly with the conferences and local churches in the affected areas. Every cent you donate to disaster relief goes to relief, not overhead. Donate online here, or you can mail a check to:

Advance GCFA
PO Box 9068 GPO
New York, NY 10087-9068

* please put #901670 in the memo line so it is directed to disaster relief.

BUCKETS

In order to help meet the specific needs of people returning to their homes in the area, we are asking for relief kits. Why Those Songs?!

Being in music ministry for over 13 years I’ve heard:

“Why do we sing _____ song(s)?!” or
“Why can’t we sing _______ song(s)?” or
“Why are we not singing ________ song(s)?” or
“We haven’t sung ______ song(s)!”

Some may have wondered why their favorite song has not been sung in church lately.
Some have approached me with great questions on “why” and had wonderful suggestions with “we should…”
Many times, my answers are the same, “We’ll sing them as soon as the scripture calls for them.”

So, I thought I would share with you, the thought process on selecting hymns (both traditional and praise) for worship.

  1. Read bible for upcoming Sundays scripture, theme,  message
  2. Pray
  3. Narrow down the songs with these things in mind: scripture, theology, tunes, inclusive language, familiarity and sing-ability
  4. Pray
  5. Refine the song list down to reflect theology through prayer, meditation and the Holy Spirit
  6. Pray
  7. Criteria: Can this song be used by God to transform people’s lives?
  8. Pray
  9. Criteria: Will this song invoke questions, challenges and strengthen to our belief/faith in God?
  10. Pray
  11. After narrowing down to 3-5 songs;
Practice! Over and over again till I get the pronunciation right, feels right in the voice and in my hands.
  12. Pray
  13. Finalize the selections
  14. Pray
  15. Practice! To emphasize the key words and phrases to reflect scripture and theology.
  16. Pray

What’s New on Sundays and Wednesdays!

Sundays  9:15am – 10:15am
Wednesdays  5:30pm – 7:00pm (*Free Supper Included*)

This fall we’re kicking off Trackers of Truth in our children’s Sunday School. Trackers is a three year cycle of curriculum in which K-6 students will dive into the Old Testament, New Testament, and timeless teachings of the church. It’s fun, witty, and most importantly, substantive. It’s designed to help children grow spiritual roots by digging deep into the riches of God’s Word. Our greatest hope is to introduce them to Jesus through the dynamic story of redemption found in Scripture.

But it’s not just for Sunday mornings!

Starting August 29, we’re offering a Wednesday night opportunity for our kids to play games, sing songs, memorize Scripture, and reinforce the Trackers lessons. Oh… AND FREE SUPPER IS INCLUDED!

But it’s not just for kids!

We want parents to join us for supper, and then we’ve got something for them, too.

We asked around, and with today’s schedules we knew that a lot of parents don’t have the time (or mental bandwidth) for a full curriculum Bible study. But they want to connect with others in our church, pray, and live through the Scriptures together.

Luckily, we’re Methodists.

When the Methodist movement was started, a key aspect of its growth and influence was an intentional form of discipleship that was not curriculum based, but focused on the soul and prayerful group questions and discussions. It was called the Class Meeting, and it helped people learn how to interpret every part of their lives through the lens of the gospel to become followers of Jesus Christ in word and deed (you can read more here).

So we’ll have supper together at 5:30, then from 6-7 the kids will go with Ms. Abie for Trackers. At the same time parents (and anyone in our church) are invited to go with Pastor Omar for a modern Class Meeting.

Kick-Off Sunday is August 26th with breakfast during the Sunday School hour (9:15am-10:15am) and then worship at 10:30.

And we need to know how many are coming for supper, so please sign up for Wednesday nights by clicking here.

We look forward to seeing you in worship and on Wednesdays! Until then, check out the video below and share it with your kids!
